Athens Post-Cruise Tour

July 3–5, 2023

Extend your trip by joining an exclusive post-cruise tour in and around Athens, the capital of Greece and one of the two great birthplaces of Western Civilization. Featuring unrivaled views of the famed Acropolis and Parthenon, the five-star Hotel Grande Bretagne will be our home in the heart of the city.

Program:

Day One | Monday, July 3, 2023

Disembark and depart the pier via air-conditioned motor coach. The drive to Corinth will proceed along the seaside highway with views of the Saronic Gulf. A short stop at the Corinth Canal will allow you the opportunity to view and photograph it. The canal connects the Aegean Sea with the Ionian Sea.

We continue to Ancient Corinth, which dominates the narrow strip of land that links northern and southern Greece. It is here that the Apostle Paul lived and preached for two years. Our tour will visit the huge Agora and the Temple of Apollo, which dates to approximately 540 BC.

Enjoy a lunch buffet in our private room at the Nafplia Palace Hotel. The hotel offers breathtaking views across the Bay of Argolis and of Nafplion below. Following lunch, renowned classicist and author Victor Davis Hanson will speak on the topic: “From Mycenaean Citadel to Corinthian City-State: The Birth of Western Civilization.”

Victor Davis Hanson is the Wayne and Marcia Buske Distinguished Fellow in History at Hillsdale College, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, a professor of classics emeritus at California State University, Fresno, and a nationally syndicated columnist for Tribune Media Services. He has written for several publications, including The Wall Street Journal, the Claremont Review of Books, The New Criterion, and the Daily Telegraph. A recipient of the National Humanities Medal and the Bradley Prize, he is the author of numerous books, including The Soul of Battle, The Second World Wars: How the First Global Conflict Was Fought and Won, The Case for Trump, and The Dying Citizen: How Progressive Elites, Tribalism, and Globalization Are Destroying the Idea of America.

After lunch, continue to Mycenae, a major center of ancient Greek civilization. Once the heart of the legendary kingdom of Agamemnon, our tour of this fascinating archaeological site will include visits to the Tomb of Agamemnon, the once-walled palace, and the Lion Gate. At the end of our guided tour, we will take a scenic drive along the Saronic Gulf coastal road to Athens for hotel check in. The remainder of the evening and dinner is on your own.

Day Two | Tuesday, July 4, 2023

Following breakfast at the hotel, travel via air-conditioned motor coach to the Acropolis, also known as “The Sacred Rock” of Athens. During the Golden Age of Pericles in the 5th century BC, a grand building program began in Athens. Within this period, three important temples were erected: the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike. The Propylaea, gateway to the Acropolis, was also constructed in this period.

Continue to the New Acropolis Museum. The museum focuses on findings from the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens and exhibits more than 4,000 ancient works, including some of the best surviving classical sculptures that once adorned the Acropolis.

Enjoy a group lunch at Dionysos Restaurant.

After lunch, continue on a panoramic tour of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the National Gardens, the National Library, and Parliament Building. At the end of our panoramic tour, return to the hotel with time to freshen up before our private group farewell reception.

This evening, gather for a group farewell reception at the Hotel Grande Bretagne in Grand Ballroom A & B. Dinner is on your own.
